Care of silk
These
measures will ensure long term preservation for future generations.
Silk is a natural
fibre. The weaving of the fabric may contain minor variations and
irregularities that are characteristics of silk yarn. These
characteristics should in no way be regarded as defects
~
If you
wish to preserve your gown for future generations, it is important
to have any soiling removed as soon as possible, preferably by a
specialist dry cleaner, one who is used to working with delicate silk
fabrics.
Once the
cleaning has been done, please do not wrap or hang covered in plastic as
this is not protective, in fact it could harm the fabric.
The gown
should be wrapped in the acid free tissue paper, taking care to add more
tissue on any folds. The gown can now be placed in the acid free
preservation box.
Store the
box in a cool dry place, not a loft or airing cupboard.
